Chuck Medina Behring

is a Producer, Arranger, Composer, Performer, 3D Artist, and Animator who achieved his MFA degree in Music from California Institute of the Arts in Los Angeles, CA.

Chuck Behring is a queer artist, musician, producer, and animator based in Los Angeles. Born in the early 1990s, Chuck always had a passion for music and art. At the age of 17, Chuck formed the project Rollercoasterwater, a psychedelic pop band that would eventually become his calling card. Rollercoasterwater played its first show opening for Avey Tare's Slasher Flicks at The Echo in L.A. During this time, Avey Tare of the historic band Animal Collective gave Chuck valuable advice about singing, being an experimental musician, and staying true to oneself. In the following years, Chuck played every show offered to him, from bars and house parties to underground raves in the desert and notable Los Angeles venues like The Smell, The Resident, The Hi-Hat, and Non-Plus Ultra. This experience eventually led to his 2014 debut album:

Dripping Retina

which was released to widespread critical acclaim and charted at number 16 on the CMJ Hot 100 College Radio Charts. In 2016, Rollercoasterwater released the follow-up EP:

Umami Sounding Fireball

which had a less electronic, more accessible psychedelic-rock inspired approach, the online success and positive press reception of this EP allowed him to embark on a west coast tour of the US that same year.

In 2018, Chuck released his second album:

Degauss Advance

a slightly darker bedroom pop album recorded in his home studio. The first song off that album, “Sphere Diet,” was his most successful single yet, and was featured on Spotify's official “Fresh Finds” & “Exospheres” playlists.

Chuck continued to explore new sounds and genres, tackling everything from field recordings, sugary bubblegum hyperpop, vaporwave, luscious ambient synth and guitar soundscapes, dance bass music, noise and drone, and psychedelic vocal looping.

In 2021, while pursuing his master’s at CAL ARTS in the throws of the pandemic Chuck released his third album:

The Animator

inspired by his foray into the field of animation. The album showcases Chuck's diverse range of skills and interests, incorporating elements of visual art and sound design. The Animator is a testament to Chuck's interest and strong affection for where pop music and animation intersect.

In addition to his work with Rollercoasterwater and his studies at the California Institute of the Arts, Chuck Behring also started an experimental project called Hug Relief in 2021. Combining hyperpop and orchestral music, Hug Relief released the EP:

Huge Relief

that same year. With Huge Relief, Chuckie explores the intersection of classical music and modern pop sounds, creating a unique and innovative sound that is both uplifting and emotional. The EP features lush, orchestral arrangements alongside driving beats and catchy hooks, showcasing Chuckie's skill as a producer and arranger.

Aside from his music career, Chuck is also an accomplished visual artist and animator. In 2022, he received his MFA Degree as a Performer/Composer from the California Institute of the Arts, where he honed his skills as a multi-disciplinary artist. While pursuing his degree, Chuck was a student teacher who shared his knowledge and technical expertise in music production, sound design, and composition with undergraduate students. Chuck also conceived and had the opportunity to tech a class called “Vaporwave vs Hyperpop” where he examined the two net-art and musical artistic movements and their similarities with students.

Currently, Chuck is working on his newest work, a dance project, called Chuck Being, which combines his love of music and movement and will release its first album in 2023.

Chuck Behring is a multi-faceted artist whose dedication to his craft and his willingness to explore new sounds and genres makes him an exciting and innovative figure in the music world of Los Angeles.
